What equipment do I need for woodworking?
I have asked this question to a lot of people and each give me a different answer. So I have gotten a thousand different answers in all. I am looking for a hobby and woodworking is the one that got my attention the most. I want to know what would be all of the equipment I need to purchase. What is everything that I need to pick this hobby up and get started. Also, people always ask if I want to do woodworking, others ask if I want to do wood carving, and others ask if I want to do wood widdling. What is the diffrence?

Okay, Whittling is casual carving done almost ONLY with a pocket knife. Wood Carving can run from whittling through to VERY complex carving requiring dozens of specialized knives and chisels. Wood-working to me also includes making furniture and functional items like jewelry boxes, hope-chests, such.
Here on the ranch, we have a shop with over 300 “wood-working” tools (that adds up to well over $ 50,000 over the years).
TOOLS I would START with:
HAND Saws (Rip and Crosscut)
Hand MITER Saw and miter box
Coping Saw
Scroll or Jig Saw
Circular Saw (for ripping plywood)
Chisel Set and Mallet
Hand Plane
Surforms
Rasps
Carving Knives
Clamps
Dremel Tool
Things you buy AFTER you realize you love working with wood:
Router Table
Table Saw
Chop Saw
Power Miter Saw
More Clamps
Lathe and it’s extra tools
Jigs for routing Dovetail joints
Biscuit Router
Steamer Box
… and the list goes on and on !!
Was just taking a break from building tool-carriers and racks for our ATV’s… home-made will cost me nothing (scrap wood: the wood would have cost me maybe $ 30), yet buying the same racks from the manufacturer would have cost me $ 500 + !!
GOOD LUCK and I understand the fact you get a different answer from almost every person… because WE ALL have different favorite tools, or those we “consider” essential.
I read the other guys and their advice is good.
However, I didn’t see a drill in their lists. It can be a hand drill (tedious, but accurate) or a power drill, but you will need it at least for drilling holes for screws - so as to prevent splitting the wood.
A note about power tools - they are powerFUL! Wear safety glasses when using any power tool. Take reasonable safety precautions - keep blades sharp, push blades away from you, read the manuals that come with your tools.
Two others things for ideas and materials, pick up a couple of magazines and look through them for ideas and ads.
The other is to look for a woodworking group you might join, or a class in general woodworking you can take.
The important thing in a hobby is enjoying yourself. Injuries are NOT enjoyable!
